Dr. Vicky Athanasiou’s path into dentistry led her to found the practice she wished existed. A lifelong New Yorker, she earned her DDS from Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine in 2015 and completed a one-year residency at Montefiore Medical Center, overseeing trauma cases. She went on to build an advanced focus in cosmetic dentistry and dental implants, and completed extensive Invisalign training through the American Academy of Clear Aligners.
After several years in private practice, Dr. Vicky kept noticing the same thing: patients were genuinely afraid of the dentist. In 2021, she opened SMILELOUNGE in Greenpoint to change that — a practice built around a calmer, more soothing visit, from the blankets and headphones in the chair to how her team explains a treatment plan. She still lives five blocks from the Franklin Street studio and personally interviews every doctor before they join the team.

Dr. Vicky believes the dentist’s chair shouldn’t feel like something to get through. She built SMILELOUNGE around that idea directly, a soothing, spa-like environment paired with straightforward, judgment-free explanations of what she sees and what your options are. Her goal for every patient is the same one that started the practice: to make people feel comfortable enough to actually keep coming back.
When she’s not at the studio, Dr. Vicky is usually on a tennis court, traveling, reading, or spending time with her toddler and family. She lives five blocks from SMILELOUNGE, in the same Greenpoint community she treats — one of the reasons she describes the practice as a neighborhood one, not just a business in the neighborhood.
